The Norfolk Painting School
Oil Painting Courses. Gallery. Specialist Materials
A typical course day

Unlike many painting schools where students
are simply supervised we provide fully
structured days to maximise your learning
experience, a typical day is:

9.30 Meet your fellow students over coffee in
the School dining room, at the same time you
can enjoy Martin's permanent gallery to get
some ideas of what to ask him in class.

10.00 Take your seat in the Studio while
Martin delivers a power point lecture on the
illustrated talks on  subjects such as, Optical
techniques (glazing, scumbling etc), Building a
painting, Colour Mixing, Composition, Tonal
planning; indeed whatever your course covers!
Students are encouraged to ask questions,
and many lectures include short activities such
as sketching, paint making, discussions or self
assessments.

@11.30-1pm  Work at your easel at a simple
preliminary study, that Martin has
demonstrated. This gives you the chance to try
the materials and get rid of any nerves before
starting your main piece

1pm-1.30 (approx) Enjoy a 2 course home
cooked lunch in the company of your fellow
students, Martin and his assistant will join you
for coffee to listen to your feedback before the
afternoon session. Typical menus include
Salmon Quiche, Lasagna, Shepherd's Pie,
Spicy Chicken, Ploughman's Lunch, followed
by home made trifle, cheesecake, crumble etc.
Students have free access to tea, coffee and
biscuits all day.

1.45-@4 pm

Martin starts(or continues) a full
demonstration, where you have the opportunity
to ask questions as he puts into practice the
theories you covered in the morning.
You will start your piece, either just before or
after lunch (depending on that particular day's
timings), and will be instructed to work to an
achievable interim stage in preparation for the
next day's work.

Day 2

The second day of courses have less theory
and more demonstration and practical as you
and Martin will be putting what you have
learned into practice. If you have a specific
issue or difficulty Martin will normally have
identified it by day 2 and should be able to give
you specific, focused tuition. To facilitate this
on busy courses, Martin's apprentice Tim Hall
(a professional painter in his own right) will be
on hand for full classes of 8 students.

Martin will normally finish the course with a
summary and set you some achievable
learning goals to work to at home. There will
also be an opportunity for you to purchase any
of the specialist materials we stock from the
School shop.
Start your by wandering around the
gallery or take coffee next door in the
dining room; your studio is just through
the large sliding doors
In the studio there's
ample light and room, for
2009 we've added
individual workstations
rather than the shared
materials benches on
this photograph.
Lectures are amplified
and the studio with
adjacent WC is
wheelchair friendly
Holiday or plein air
courses your first
working space will
look a bit like this,
before you get to
the studio.
'Phew! Don't know
what I was worried
about' ; here's 'C'
after an Essentials
course with her
FIRST oil painting.
It really is easy if
you learn how to
do it in the right
way!
The School is situated in
peaceful North Norfolk,
about 30 minutes relaxed
driving from King's Lynn;
as you can see it's even
more relaxing to park.
The local pub is just
across the road for after
school drinks!
This is where you'll enjoy your
home cooked lunch, although
you'll be nipping in and out of
here for coffee and biscuits
most of the day!
