Essential Oils
‘Martin, the days course; Essential Oils was
just fabulous. All these years, albeit intermittently,
I have painted - I really hadn't been 'properly'
painting at all.
Roy Wilkinson - Essential Oils student 2007
If you’ve always fancied a go at oil painting, but think
it might be a bit daunting then Essential Oils is for
you.
Aimed at those who wish to move to oils from
watercolour, improve existing skills or simply want an
introduction to our methods. During the course we
will cover, amongst other things:
Which colours to buy
Which brushes to use
How oil paint is made/works
The proper use of oil mediums
How to design and equip your studio
Two basic approaches to oil painting
Glazing, scumbling and layered painting
Our step by step approach to painting
How to mix colours
Disaster recovery techniques
Based around the production of a 30x 40” oil
landscape, the course is a mixture of
theory, demonstration and tutored ‘hands-on’ painting.
At the end of the course you will have produced both
a tonal oil sketch and a larger oil painting to a method
that you can use in your own studio. The methods
used in Essential Oils are carried forward in our
intermediate courses, making it a great building block
if you plan a period of study with us.
Oils are endlessly fascinating paints to work with, but because they have the reputation of being difficult far too many people never get the chance to experience the creative freedom they offer. This course is about giving you that chance and will take years off your learning time by helping you avoid mistakes.
